Training Seminars / Another Firearm Training Short...
Last post by Ron Nichols - March 13, 2025, 05:00:50 PM
"Inconclusive Opinions - The appropriateness of the inconclusive opinion" has been recorded, uploaded, and available free of charge! It is the third in a series of Firearm Training Shorts inspired by some of my grandson's favorite Pixar shows, Pixar Shorts.

In this Training Short we will be taking a deeper dive into the inconclusive opinion. Such opinions have been the source of some contention in evidentiary hearings, and it is becoming increasingly important to communicate to the court why the inconclusive opinion is both reasonable and essential to prevent miscarriages of justice. We will do this in the context of a discussion of many of the common contentions of critics while shedding some reality on those very points. We will then close with an overview of how the inconclusive opinion should be viewed and handled.

Remember, if you have not already enrolled into the school you will have to do that first before registering for the course. Other training will be coming and if you have requests for training shorts, feel free to comment!

Training Seminars / VCU Forensic Firearms Identifi...
Last post by sabarnhouse - March 12, 2025, 04:38:05 PM
As announced at the AFTE seminar in Austin, Virginia Commonwealth University is launching an external training opportunity for crime labs.  The training program has been broken into separate modules that will include both online and in-person courses hosted on campus in Richmond, VA.  The first online course is available now with a short turnaround but if you are interested, please reach out to me at the email listed below.  The first module will cover history and introductory material typically included in standard training programs.  Trainees or students will earn a digital badge and certificate of completion upon satisfactory scores of all assessments.  For more information, you can go to the VCU Forensic Science website under Events:

Job Announcements / Las Vegas is Calling!
Last post by Roy Wilcox - March 12, 2025, 09:07:57 AM
Hello from Sunny Las Vegas!  We're looking for our next great NIBIN technician to work within one of the most admired NIBIN units in the country.  This is a well-respected and well-funded group that's achieving fast turnaround times and working, nearly in real-time, to crack cases and provide good leads for our partners.

Currently for this job classification, a 4 year degree in a science field is required, and that's due to the desire to hire firearm examiner trainees from this group if/when the opportunity presents itself.  Also, having that education allows NIBIN techs to be appealing to other details within the forensics lab, meaning this is a GREAT "foot in the door" kind of job, while being paid as much as a regular forensic scientist in many other labs!

Consider what Las Vegas offers:
  • Lots of sun  8)
  • All the fun of California and her beaches nearby, but without the taxes
  • Mt Charleston (camping, hiking, sledding, skiing) less than an hour away
  • Lake Mead and all the aquatic fun you can handle
  • Colorado River with kayaking and fishing options
  • Red Rock National Park
  • St George and the stunning Zion National Park just a short drive up I-15
  • Vegas Golden Knights (Stanley Cup Champions 2023 - Whoop Whoop!)
  • Raiders Football
  • Athletics MLB is coming!
  • Any band or traveling performance you can imagine comes through Las Vegas.  They literally ALL come here.
  • A Foodie's dream city
  • No state tax
  • One of the nation's best cities to find cheap airfare in/out, so travel adventures anywhere are more affordable
  • Lots of "Locals" discounts available and a very supportive community for what we do here

If you're hoping to work for a great group in a awesome lab with administration that very supportive, please apply!  Here's the link, and they're taking applications until 3/27, or until they have 150 applicants (whichever comes first), so act fast!
